Dental disease in pets is one of the most diagnosed conditions in the exam room. Bad breath is NOT normal in pets, and the number one reason is dental disease. Pets don't get cavities like we do; they suffer from periodontal disease, plaque and calculus. This calculus invades the gums opening them up to food and bacteria. These bacteria can gain entrance to the blood system and thus travel around the body to other organs, most notably the liver, kidney and heart valves.

So dental cleanings and surgery is much more than just about fixing bad breath! Generally this is a same day procedure with follow-ups for education about preventing future dental disease.

Now there is a new dental vaccine for dogs. The main bacteria that cause dental disease in dogs have been isolated and a vaccine made against them. This then boosts the immune system in the gums to kill the bacteria as they try to invade. Smaller breed dogs seem to be more susceptible to dental disease.

Cats also have dental disease and often need extractions.
